My trailer
This is a trailer I built over the summer of 2015. I really hate messing with tent poles in the cold and getting dressed in a tent, it’s just awkward. While driving home from my 2014 vacation, I thought for a while about different trailer ideas and started doing research after I finished the trip. I considered many ideas, from a basic support frame for a standard tent to be off the ground, to a teardrop design until I finally settled on what you see here. The project isn’t finished, but it works well enough for now.
From the ground up…
255/85/16 (33×10″) Maxxis Bighorn tires on 16″ Black Rock “Lobo” wheels with a 5×5 bolt pattern to match the Jeep.
Timbren Axle-less 2000HD suspension with 10″ Nev-R-Adjust electric brakes.
Home-built frame from 2×3″ .120″-wall box steel with 2×2″ box and 2″ angle for crossmembers. Rear hitch receiver for recovery point. Tongue is 2″-ID receiver tubing and extends back to the first crossmember and uses a 6000lb Max-Coupler instead of a normal ball hitch.
2 1/4 cu ft Tongue box from Harbor Freight with switch panel, battery, fire extinguisher and tire chocks.
Dinoot M series fiberglass body kit.
Jeep CJ7 tailgate and hinges. Drilled to use locking t-handle latches.
10″ wide fenders from a local steel yard.
And the pièce de résistance… an OzTrail Outer Ridge Venturer trailer tent.
